Having already won acclaim as a short film of the same title, Chazelle decided to adapt it into a feature and the result is one of the best screenplays to read in recent years.

Written on spec by writing team Lucas and Moore Four Christmases, Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past , this script is a near-perfect execution of a very high concept. Along with Days of Summer , this is probably the best screenplay to come out in Bookended by Thanksgiving dinner parties and with a novelistic feel, this best screenplay Oscar winner is a perfect blend of comedy with weighty themes about the meaning of life. Tina Fey turned her hand to feature writing with this adaptation from a book by Rosalind Wiseman.

The writing is just as smart, funny and relevant as when the movie first came out over ten years ago. Or any comedy for that matter. Payne and Taylor, however, get the story moving right off the bat by opening with Miles getting ready for the trip. Dismissed by some as Charlie Kaufman-lite, this is the best screenplay to read to get your creative juices flowing if you write dark comedy.

Imaginative, thought-provoking, high concept and, best of all, extremely funny. One thing many aspiring comedy screenwriters fail to do is add set pieces to their spec screenplays. From Ted picking Mary up for prom, to getting arrested for cruising, this is the best screenplay to learn how to elevate a simple situation into a big comedic set piece.

The result was this best screenplay Oscar nominee and a classic of the rom-com genre. Christopher Nolan helped bring a much darker edge to the Batman franchise with Batman Begins, and this collaboration with his brother is an even better screenplay.

Absorb all you can from this exceptional piece of work. De Souza reportedly wrote the script to this seminal action movie as if the antagonist, Gruber, were the protagonist. You should sometimes think about looking at your movie through the point of view of the villain who is really driving the narrative.

There are so many writing lessons to be learned from reading this best screenplay Oscar-nominated script. The way the theme of emotions connecting people together is thread through her journey, etc.

Yet another Pixar classic. The big takeaway from reading this screenplay is the value of research. Oh, and he also embedded with Navy Seals for a month in Iraq. Johnson has said of writing the script he wanted it to be character based rather than focus on the mechanics of time-travel.

He drew inspiration from movies such as The Terminator, 12 Monkeys , and Witness. One of the best screenplays to read if you love mixing sci-fi with ironic humor and time-travel. The Wachowskis pitched the script to Warner Bros. They then decided to bring on board underground comic book artists Steve Skroce and Geof Darrow to storyboard the entire film, shot-by-shot.

Warners were impressed and the rest, as they say, is history. Having kicked the idea around for several years, Reese and Wernick originally wrote the story as a TV spec. Three of the best script writers in Hollywood collaborated for this modern classic.

Beattie originally had the idea for the movie aged seventeen while riding in the back of a cab in his native Sydney. He then worked up a two-page treatment called The Last Domino , which he turned into a screenplay.

Later he was lucky enough to be put in touch with Darabont and then Mann who both contributed revisions. He then went on to write a staggering more drafts before finalizing the one that went on to win the Best Original Screenplay Oscar in Yet another best screenplay nominee based on a novel.

Gilroy had the initial idea for Nightcrawler way back in Reading the script you can see why Josh Brolin was initially nervous. Guzikowski based the script on his own short story, which in turn was inspired by The Tell-Tale Heart in which a father gets revenge on the man who kills his kid in a hit and run by sticking him down a well.

Many of the tropes have been copied almost to the point of cliche by a generation of later writers. But this script was groundbreaking for its time and is impossible to ignore if you want to learn how to become a screenwriter.

That was a shocker. I wrote that script on spec out of frustration. I was trying to make sales writing mediocre movie scripts, I guess, trying to anticipate what the studios would buy, and I wrote that for myself. I was tired of second-guessing the system and I just wanted to say something. McQuarrie and director Bryan Singer both worked on the initial concept of five guys meeting in a police line-up. I stole it from everybody.

A fantastic exploration of the darkness within ourselves, and one of the best horror movie scripts for any aspiring writer to read. The screenplay only credits Gunn and Tolkin as rewriters of this George A. Romero script.

The origins of this spec screenplay are just as creepy as the film. As Reddick recounts, he was given the idea by a real-life story of a woman whose life was saved by her mom who warned her not to take a flight that wound up crashing. Reddick then wrote the script as an X-Files spec but was advised by a friend to reshape it into a feature.

Aster originally conceived of the script as a drama about a family tragedy drama, inspired by the grisly real-life incident from in which John Hutcherson accidentally decapitated his childhood friend, Frankie Brohm.

However, as the script developed, the second half gradually morphed into the full-blown horror we have now—although Aster is still careful not to call it a horror film outright.

The same core team behind the Saw movies—writer, Leigh Whannell, and director, James Wan—had a point to prove with this script. Read this first and best of the Insidious franchise for a masterclass in how create a horror through tension over gore. Fresh off her success with Juno , Cody originally intended to write a straight, slasher horror movie. Seltzer was commissioned by the producer, Harvey Bernhard, to write a movie about the Antichrist after Bernhard was given the idea by a friend, Bob Munger.

It took Seltzer exactly one year to write the screenplay and it would go on to be one of the most iconic horror movies of all time. This script was born purely out of budgetary restrictions as writers Whannell and Wan deliberately wanted to write a horror film as cheaply as possible.

One that they could finance themselves. Inspired by low-budget movies such as Pi and The Blair Witch Project , they decided on the concept of two actors, one room, and one dead body. Easily one of the best screenplays to read for horror writers. This is still one of the finest horror movie scripts ever written. Read as many movie scripts as you can and watch your screenwriting ability soar. The best screenplay writers put everything right there on the page to make you connect with the story.

This is the first real use I gave to this app. Life is funny.

Why is it any good? Well, I obviously have nothing to compare it with. I don't know if this is the average story or style or quality.

I don't have fancy notions of art, I just know it when I like something. And this I loved. It's adorable, it's hilarious Well, that was bliss. It's adorable, it's hilarious, there are very funny moments, and that's why I didn't expect to be kicked right in the feelz very into the story. Sometimes I don't know what's going on exactly and I have the sensation I'm missing something out: scenes just after an important moment which doesn't appear, conversations about previous conversations that happen off-stage.

I'm also not used to comics, so there were times I didn't know who was speaking at the moment because the speech bubble was ambiguous. This is a bromance, two high-school guys who are BFF but maybe they both want However, all in all, it pretty much enjoyed this and couldn't stop reading until the very last chapter and Now I don't know what to do with my life. A friend recommended 19 Days to me years ago. I read it for the first time way back and only just got around to re-reading it. I'd nearly forgotten how wonderful this story is, and I'm so glad to have gone through it once again!

Weekly updates are still happening as it is still an ongoing work. We follow them through the 4. We follow them through their hilarious high school and university adventures as they grow through friendship and maybe even something more. Eventually the two teens become acquainted with the school's most popular boy and his tagalong outcast. Together the foursome explore their touching friendship and troubling pasts amidst new daily adventures. Never did I think this story--beginning so light hearted and funny--would have me in tears over the fate of our boys' relationship.

Old Xian is a great author for being able to make me cry one chapter and laugh the next. This comic never fails to brighten my week with each new update. The art style has always been great, though over time it has progressed even further. The character designs and art style are both unique to any other manga I've read.

I particularly love the attention to detail in Old Xian's backgrounds, as many artists tend to gloss over them without much thought. This is a really hilarious story, it's hard to put into words how much I've come to love it! Regardless, it's one of the first manga's I've ever read and played large role in what sparked my love for the genre, so 19 Days will always have a special place in my heart! Shelves: heartwarming , amusing-or-hilarious , comics , pampers-the-emo-within , freefic , manga-yaoi , friend-recs.

I was hooked within minutes. Usually, I cautiously circle Kyn's recs because generally seen things cannot be unseen, but again I have to bow down to her awesomeness: 19 Days is absolutely amazing. I devoured this comic with a grin plastered on my face. What a fantastic blend of great art, humor, UST so much delicious pining! I did not expect this to be so cleverly layered at all. But in between these guys' dumbass moves, a Squee!

But in between these guys' dumbass moves, and scenes in which these use each other as punching bags, there are sudden gentle moments that are so delicately romantic, and heartwarming flashbacks, that I can't help but hope that eventually I'm a fan.

Can't wait for the next update ETA: took away 1 star because the latest chapters are all over the place, and are sorely lacking that subtle progression between the 2 MCs. View all 74 comments. Apr 11, Maria rated it really liked it.

It's interesting how, although many people have read this book countless of times, that they believe it takes place in a High School setting, and that some believe that there is no connection between the pages and chapters.

In fact, if you read it closely and disregard the humor even if it is hilarious one will able to understand the plot at hand. Things I want to make clear: 1. This is not a High School setting, it is a Middle School setting. For those who have read this, it clearly says t It's interesting how, although many people have read this book countless of times, that they believe it takes place in a High School setting, and that some believe that there is no connection between the pages and chapters.

For those who have read this, it clearly says that in the beginning Jian Yi was absent from High School. He suddenly disappeared and vanishes. If you take notice, in the "present" Zhengxi is more violent and hostile towards Jian Yi where as in their Middle School days, he is not. We are reading their life in Middle school. There is a plot and not just all snippets of their life. In the beginning it may not seem so, but as we look back into the memory of their Middle School days, a deep and serious plot is evident.

I've read this manhua about four times. The first time it was all jokes and I saw no connection at all. The second and third times I had a feeling it wasn't about HighSchool and that there was something big I was missing. The fourth time, well, I payed closer attention to the small details in that what I found out is that perhaps a total of ten chapters or more were focused on only one single day try dismissing the "one day" above every chapter to understand the story's time frame.

I feel that despite all the humor in this manhua, the main focus is on Jian Yi and his struggle in understanding what it is about him that makes him so different from other guys.
